Networking: The Core of Your Career

After you've created all your "self-marketing documents" and verbal presentations, you're ready to take your job search "to the street" and begin networking. The goal is to contact people who can help you reach the hiring managers inside your target companies. Networking can be done on the phone, in person, via e-mail or even "snail mail."

Ford Myers, M.Ed., president of Career Potential, a Haverford, PA-based career consulting firm and developer of the "New Year, New Career Power Plan to Achieving Career Success in 2006" states, "Networking is a lot simpler and less scary than many people think. You do not need to be a good 'schmoozer' to network effectively. In fact, the best networkers are often great listeners, as opposed to great talkers."

And no matter what, don't ever let-up on your networking efforts. Ninety-five percent of my clients land great jobs through their networks. It's not worth risking those odds to NOT be continually networking! Remember: If you're in career transition, networking IS your job. It should be the primary focus of everything you do. The quantity and quality of your networking time is directly related to the personal, professional, and financial satisfaction you'll have in your next job."

Networking: The Core of Your Career

Who should be on your contact list? Who should you be reaching out to? The answer is: everyone you know. Everyone? Yes, everyone! Every single person alive who knows your name should be on your contact list! (The only exception is people who clearly don't like you)! It doesn't matter what these contacts do for a living, or where they live, or how much power or money they have. The key is not to pre-judge people or make assumptions about who can and cannot help you. After guiding thousands of clients through the networking process, I have learned that most new jobs are secured through people who were least expected to be of help!

Let's "de-mystify" the networking process, so it won't seem overwhelming or confusing to you any longer. What follows is a highly-structured and purposeful approach that consistently produces excellent results! Using your Contact List to focus on the specific people to contact, here are the basic steps you'll need to follow:

1. Build Rapport. State, "I was referred by (give name of mutual friend/colleague), or "I was referred by our mutual colleague/friend (give name), who suggested that" .... (Find some area of common interest to discuss). I'm contacting you about a career matter, but let me assure you that I am not calling to ask you for a job - nor do I expect you to even know of any job openings. Let me start by telling you a bit about myself and my professional background....

2. State "where you've been" by using a Positioning Statement. This is a succinct, pre-prepared verbal statement that explains "who you are" professionally. Example: "I am a senior Financial and Operations Professional and graduate of Western General's Financial Management Program. I have more than 15 years of experience in the Manufacturing and Services industries. My strengths include analysis, problem-solving, communication and innovation. I have specific expertise in Financial Analysis and Reporting, Cash and Risk Management, and Productivity Analysis. I am seeking a leadership position with a focus on Financial Reporting."

3. Share "what happened" with an Exit Statement. This is a concise explanation of why you're no longer at your previous position, or why you're interested in leaving your current employer. Example: "As a result of a merger between two business units, over 1,500 positions have been affected, including mine. I now have the opportunity to explore other career options in Financial Services that will leverage my proven strengths in analysis, problem-solving, communication and innovation." The Exit Statement must be expressed in positive terms, so there will be no suspicion that you "did something wrong" to lose your job.

4. Ask for help. "Would you be willing to help me?"

5. "Decompress" - take the pressure off - reassure your contact again that you are not asking for a job. Reiterate, "As I said, I am not asking you for a job, nor do I expect you to know of any appropriate positions. However, I am interested any advice or guidance that you could offer, in addition to any networking contacts you could provide. (Give name of mutual friend/colleague) told me that you'd be a great person to talk to for this purpose. Would you be willing to review some of my credentials, and give me candid feedback? I could send the materials right over."

6. Ask again for help, i.e., expanding contact network, guidance, advice, feedback. Leverage the notion of "six degrees of separation" - ask for contacts from your contacts! And always "come from generosity." This means you should be on the lookout for opportunities to offer something of value in return.

7. Share your main documents, and set a time to get back to them. State, "I'll e-mail (or fax) a one-page Professional Biography and list of Target Companies to you. Then I'd like to follow-up and have another conversation - when would be better for you, Wednesday afternoon or Friday morning? I know your input will be of great value, and I appreciate your willingness to help. Follow-up after your networking meeting and keep the conversation going with two-way value exchange. Note: if the contact is a "center of influence," try to have your follow-up discussion face-to-face instead of on the phone, unless the contact is outside your geographic region.

It's a smart career move to always be networking, no matter what's going on for you professionally. If you don't need help at this time, build-up your networking power by helping others. In general, people will want to help you. It makes them feel good about themselves. It boosts their self-esteem to be considered "a connector" of people with opportunities and information, and it makes them feel important." Networking is a great investment in your future, and over the long-term, it always pays big dividends!"

How to Host a Speed Networking Event in 5 Steps

Networking events are sure great ways to build that contact base. You could literally start off with zero contacts but by taking advantage of a few good networking events, start enough momentum to have a considerable one in a very short period of time. There are several networking mixers in any given city. There never seems to be a shortage of business card exchanges, specifically geared towards connecting professionals.

One such type is called a Speed Networking Event. A Speed Networking Event is similar to speed dating in which you sit at multiple tables and meet a different business person for a few minutes each before switching to the next. By the time the event is over, everyone has connected with each other.

You can easily hold your own Speed Networking Event. Like everything else, it takes work but below, I've listed 5 specific steps;

How to Host a Speed Networking Event in 5 Steps

1. Decide on how many attendees you would like to have. When hosting a Speed Networking Event, you will want to have anywhere from 15 to 50 attendees. This means that you will need stations/tables to accommodate half the amount of your total attendees. Remember, there will be two people at each station facing each other.

2. Pick a location, like a restaurant or a hotel meeting room. Just like any other professional event, you want the background to be pleasingly professional. You also want to choose a venue that can accommodate a noisy crowd without disturbing the restaurant's other guests. Speed Networking Events can get noisy because people are constantly talking.

3. Start inviting guests. You should typically start the invitation process between 14 to 20 days before your event. When you first begin your invites, it will seem slow, like no one is really responding. Just keep promoting and you will notice that the closer you get to your event, the more people will begin inquiring and registering.

4. Purchase a mini PA system. I know from experience, this is a valuable tool because as it gets noisy and it's time for the attendees to switch stations, you won't want to have to yell in order to initiate the process. An alternative for the signal is a whistle, like those used in sports practice. I still recommend a mini PA system because it's easier to talk to a large room without damaging your vocal chords.

5. Host your event. This can be an unnerving situation your first time out. Just make sure you prepare properly. Here are a few more tips to implement at the event;

A. Make sure you have a sign in sheet to capture your guest's contact information.

B. Place a blank company letterhead at each station to give your guests an opportunity to take notes while they are conversing.

C. Make sure everyone at the event understands what's going on. When you first begin, you should give a brief explanation about what's about to happen and how it works. Also, when people come late, make sure you explain to them how it works.

Finally, what it's all over, make sure you contact your attendees and ask them to rate the event. Doing this will give you an honest assertion as to how well it went. You will also gain insight from the comments and suggestions.

Directory of All Hotmail Email Addresses - Resources to Help You Find a Long Lost Friend

As with any other email address directory, there is a directory for all Hotmail email address as well. Hotmail seems to be one of the most popular email providers to use because their service is undoubtedly one of the best online. Locating someone if they have a Hotmail email address has never been so simple. Your friends will be glad that you found them, and you will not believe how simple the process is.

Since there is indeed a directory of all Hotmail email address, the search will not be difficult in the least. The only one thing to watch out for when searching for other people's email addresses is that they are up to date. A great way to do this is to see if they have more than one email address listed by their name when you search for them. The only bad thing about it all is that it can get quite confusing if there is more than one address. The other option is to use a reverse email address search for finding who you are looking for. They are free, so there is no money to be spent on them. They usually work very well and lead you straight to the person's email address. Hopefully, with Hotmail, that will not be necessary.

When people sign up for their Hotmail accounts online, they have to provide their first and last name, which is what makes the search possible. The people that you know will not be very hard to find, and you will be glad that you used this very convenient option to do so. The fact that there is a directory of all Hotmail email address makes it a lot easier for you to message them if the need be. They have a wonderful instant messaging option located on the site that can be used to chat live with other members. Windows live makes all of those things possible. They also have a very well organized site that makes it easy to find the directory.

Directory of All Hotmail Email Addresses - Resources to Help You Find a Long Lost Friend

Hotmail is trusted and preferred because it has been around for a while, and that is why you can trust that the people you are trying to find most likely have an account with them. Some email providers are not as popular as others. Hotmail is free to use, which also increases their popularity. No one wants a lot of junk or spam mail coming to their mail box every day either, which is why they also have a great spam filtering option that makes them an even greater choice.

It is no wonder that they have so many members located on their site. There are several great themes to choose from when it comes to the layout of your homepage with them also. Whether you are searching for a friend, or just trying to make sure that your email is legitimate, a directory of all Hotmail email address definitely serves the right purpose when helping you find someone online.

What is Social Media? Social Media and Networking Sites Explained

Social media is media that is based on social interaction. It involves being highly accessible and changes monologues into dialogues. This format is often referred to by business as User generated content or consumer generated media. Most consumers are aware of it only from the stand point of the networking sites. Of course if social media is new to you this paragraph probably sounds like crazy talk, but please read on.

What are networking sites?

These are very popular websites used for socializing, connecting and even meeting others. People build connections with those they know. This allows for an amount of privacy by allowing users to hide their information from everyone but those who are "friends." Some of the most popular sites are Facebook, Twitter, MySpace even YouTube. Networking sites allow friends, family, workers and others to meet online and share information, or social interaction.

What is Social Media? Social Media and Networking Sites Explained

Why is Social Interaction so important?

People are very social creatures. Our society has become increasingly mobile. People move far away from where they grew up yet want to stay connected. Also busy schedules keeps people on the move. However the internet and networking sites are always ready. So people are able to interact with people they care about any time of day. This has formed open dialogues in groups of friends and families.

What do you mean dialogues?

Years ago an open invite to the lake meant calling various people and asking them to call others. Now a person may put an open invitation on the wall of Facebook. Various people may respond with what they will bring or if they are coming or bringing someone. Some people use social media to ask about new restaurants or what restaurant to visit in another city.

How does this turn monologues into dialogues?

A simple statement such as "I read this book," on a social networking site might have another say, "I read that one, but this other book is better." A third person who did not care about the first book may read the comment about the second and agree. In another case, a person may share that they went to London for vacation. Various friends and family members will comment about when they went or how they wish they could go. People may ask about sites seen.

But how do businesses benefit?

Businesses have watched this from the sidelines and now realized they need to be involved. Companies create fan pages and fans interact with each other and the brand name on the pages. The fans discuss what they like, what they dislike, thus the User Generated Content or Consumer Generated Media. Any size of business is finding that having someone interact with the fans and create social media is a way to grow the business by networking. People like doing business with a friend, or a friendly business.

Do I need social media?

That is a personal decision. As an individual, networking sites allow you to interact with people both down the street and around the world. With privacy settings, you keep your privacy and are able to share with the people who matter.

For businesses, this is a way to find out what your consumer wants and needs directly from them. You are also able to establish a relationship with consumers which helps your business grow. Social media is only going to grow as people find more uses for it, because people are social and so is social media.

Computer Networking - Elements and Components

When studying computer networks, one must consider the main elements that will compromise the computer network. The main elements that must be considered will be presented below:

1. Message: the message is a generic term that scribes the data to be transmitted. It can be email, webpage, user call, instant message, or any other forms. The message is generated by the end user that needs to make the transmission. This message will be fed to the network later.

Generally, the message is generated using software installed on computer. For example, if the message is email, it will be generated by email programs such as outlook. Also if the message is a web page request, it will be generated by a browser such as internet explorer. It can also be generated by a chatting program is it represents a call by the user.

Computer Networking - Elements and Components

2. Medium: the medium is the transmission path over which the data will be transmitted. Is is used to connect the end user with the network device or to connect the network devices with each other.

Many types exist for the medium. Mainly it can be wired or wireless medium. The wired medium can be copper or optical fibers. The copper is subdivided into coaxial cables and twisted pairs. The copper wires carry data as electrical pulses while the optical fiber carry data as light pulses. The wireless medium carries data as electromagnetic waves. Each of the above mediums has its own specifications and used according to the application.

3. Devices: there are two basic types of devices in the network: end user devices and network devices. The end user device is considered to be the source of the message. It can be a client computer or an IP phone. The function of the end user device is to send the data to the network.

On the other hand, the network devices are used along with the medium to forward the data generated by the end user device. They are located in between the end user devices and connected between them through the cables.

The main function of the computer network devices is to forward the data to the correct destination based on the address that is send along with the data. The two main devices that accomplish this are the routers and the switches. The router forwards the data according to the IP address while the switch forwards the data according to the MAC address inside the data frame.

4. Rules: the rules are the protocols that used between the end user devices that organize the communication. The two popular protocols are the IP protocol and the TCP protocol. When the end user needs to send the data, it runs a conversation first with the other device according to a set of rules that prepares for the transmission. Each network uses its own protocols set up by the administrator of the network to manage the operations inside the network. Note that this element is a software element and is set up by software programs

How Can I Locate Someone at No Charge? - Just Do This

You may be asking, how can I locate someone at no charge? Well I know of several ways you can use.

Almost all of the people locator websites I know will try and get you to pay a certain price for accessing their database. This might be in the form of a small fee for additional content or profile information or in the form of getting your contact details in exchange. That is, you give them yours they give you the one you are looking for.

So essentially you should decide what you consider to be a charge based on what is important to you. What I mean is that, you can choose to give away your contact information and access the information you are looking or you can use the limited free information that is provided at the first phase of your search.

How Can I Locate Someone at No Charge? - Just Do This

By the way what I have just discussed above is relevant only if you decide to use a people locator and not other "manual" alternative, which I discuss briefly below.

Now my best answer to the question, how can I locate someone at no charge is that you need to search through some social networking sites. These carry millions of profiles on different people across the globe. The trick here is that you will need to register first - give away your personal details first.

My last option on how you can locate someone at no charge is through websites that source their information from a variety of people based websites online. It's like those comparison websites you go to before you shop online. In this case the sites focus on finding the best locator that has all the information you are looking for.

The 7 Natural Laws of the Universe

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation-

* Energy moves into physical form.

* The images you hold in your mind most often materialize in results in your life.

The 7 Natural Laws of the Universe

The Law of Relativity-

* Nothing is good or bad, big or small... until you RELATE it to something.

* Practice realting your situation to something much worse and yours will always look good.

The Law of Vibration and Attraction-

* Everything vibrates, nothing rests.

* Conscious awareness of vibration is called feeling. Your thoughts control your paradigms and your vibration (which dictates what you attract).

* When you are not feeling good, become aware of what you are thinking, then think of something pleasant.

The Law of Polarity-

* Everything has an opposite: Hot - Cold ... Up - Down ... Good - Bad.

* Constantly look for the good in people and situations. When you find it, tell the person. People love compliments and the positive idea in your mind makes you feel good. Remember, good idea - good vibrations.

The Law of Rhythm-

* The tide goes out ... night follows day ... good times - bad times.

* When you are on a down swing, do not feel bad. Know the swing will change and things will get better. There are good times coming - think of them.

The Law of Cause and Effect-

* Whatever you send into the Universe comes back. Action -- re-action are equal and opposite.

* Say good things to everyone; treat everyone with total respect and it will all come back. Never worry about what you are going to get, just concentrate on what you can give.

The Law of Gender-

* Every seed has a gestation or incubation period. Ideas are spiritual seeds and will move into form or physical results.

* Your goals will manifest when the time is right. KNOW they will.

So ... why am I bringing these up?

Because YOU can utilize these Laws of Our Universe to bring UNTOLD wealth into your life; wealth in health, wealth in relationships (spiritual, family, personal, business), and financial wealth.

Wallace D. Wattles (the author of the book written in 1910 entitled The Science of Getting Rich) states "Getting rich is the result of doing things in a certain way." That is the largest truth I can share with any of my family and friends (this includes You, who are reading this). That statement, and these Laws have already done so much for me with their use value. I've experienced an enlightening, in the sense that I no longer dread debt. I no longer have astranged relationships with my family and friends that at one time I had. I no longer see life as being a "half empty glass" now it's "abundantly full".

I first learned about The Secret through my sister, back in February of this year, and caught a special on Oprah about it on my birthday that month. The show was very uplifting and had me researching the Teachers in the program, and beginning to read their books. After a few months I decided that this was undoubtedly for me. At the time of my learning and research my son and I had a rather strained relationship and we had not been close for over a year and a half; and through the power of Positive Thinking, and applying the Law of Vibration and Attraction to my life, we were able to rediscover and strengthen our relationship. We've now embarked on this journey together.

We are now on Myspace, Facebook and several other social networking sites, meeting like minded people who are either currently applying the Laws of the Universe to their lives, or are interested in learning how I (and my son) are utilizing these Laws in our daily lives. This site has already paid for its worth in gold with the genuine interest and relationships we are building here. We are Attracting people, and letting them Attract us. We are not spammers, we don't want to impose anywhere where we've not been asked. But imagine applying these Laws to your life, and how abundant things can be when approaching the same situations with such a different mindset. This is a truly mind encompassing, re-wiring of sorts, to put all your negative thoughts, emotions and energy to rest, and instead allowing you to control the positive thoughts, emotions and energy out into the world to start Attracting everything your heart desires.

By now most people have heard about The Secret and The Law of Attraction, but very few people KNOW them, and even fewer that are applying them. But I can honestly put out there, that this way of thinking and acting is the way to living the full, happy, abundant, wealthy life we all have undoubtedly dreamed of at some point or another. So ... don't you think it's about time You begin to realize everything You visualize?

Well ... what do I mean by that statement?

I mean that everything that You put out into this Universe, through the power of your thoughts and dreams and actions, can and will come to fruition, if given the time. I am most certainly NOT saying "you'll get rich if you wait for it". But what I am saying is, starting today, RIGHT NOW, start changing your outlook. Visualize sitting on the beach, or in the rain forest, and don't think "oh I don't have the time to take off" or "that takes too much money" instead, visualize and realize that sand can be in between your toes, that ocean can be lapping at your feet, with your eyes closed, and the sound of the waves crashing. Doesn't that just wet your lips? I know it does mine (I personally LOVE the ocean and the beach).

Social Networking: Positive and Negative Aspects

Social Media and Social Networking sites are taking the internet by storm. Social media serves as a great platform to interact with friends, relatives or make new friends and meet new people online. Social Media sites are technologically advanced web interfaces offering content-exchange via short-messaging services, email or chat. In spite of its growing popularity, social media faces threats of hacking.

Although people find social media essential for retaining ties, it poses threat of vulnerabilities. Since social media consists of personal information, the users must be extremely careful while providing confidential information to these sites. Though some famous social networking sites, such as, Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Google and Orkut, etc are extremely popular, they too face the threats to its users who are oblivious to safe internet practices. It is better not to give out passwords very easily, too much information sharing can often be counter-productive. It is advisable not to reveal your future travel plans on a social media site, your profile viewer with malicious intentions may plan to commit burglary in your apartment!

Therefore, privacy concerns must be of primary importance in networking. It is true that social networking provides an opportunity to develop inter-personal relationship, one need to be aware of the possible security threats. Especially, students often post detailed and specific information, on Facebook, Friendster, MySpace, etc, they can be more easily traced by strangers and even acquaintances!

Social Networking: Positive and Negative Aspects

Often they violate the school policy or the code of conduct by posting inappropriate pictures or information on their social networking profiles, so they are held accountable when the school administrators further investigate the matter. Moreover, other disadvantage is that students are often turned down job offers because of their information employers are finding out about students on their social networking sites! The employers take these images the students portray on these sites very seriously because it depicts the reflection of personal character!

Well, keeping aside the dangers of socializing on the net, it can be a good way to communicate with friends and relative, also to make connection to people with similar tastes, interests and goals! Thanks to social networking sites, because often meeting people personally has become the thing of the past. Thus, staying connected with classmates and colleagues is a major benefit of social networking sites!

It helps to stay connected with different cultural program, events listing and other information related to campus culture. What a great way to stay understand and stay connected to your campus community as a whole! Most importantly, these sites offer students the opportunity to create a positive self image.

Last but not the least, if you want to stay safe on the net, evaluate your profile account and postings frequently.Do not post your personal information, address or cell number. You can utilize and adjust your privacy settings so as to control who has the access to your personal information.

As it is said, everything has both bright and dark sides, we should be careful in using social networking sites constructively rather than destructively! So, enjoy, happy networking!

Wireless Network Components - Basics of Any Wireless Network

Client Software and Adapter

Any client computer, laptop or wireless device with a compatible wireless client adapter allows connectivity with an access point. The client adapter is a radio transmitter with firmware that supports any of 802.11a/b/g signaling. That is needed before the device can associate and authenticate with the access point. Some access points have a no client mode that doesn't allow any association from clients extending network distance. Client wireless software included with the adapter must be implemented with specific Windows platforms. The client adapter will be integrated with the laptop, PCMCIA slot or desktop PCI bus slot. They will support specific wireless standards, antenna characteristics, WiFi certification, WDS, network range and security. The wireless manufacturer software must be implemented for all available features. The following is a list of some client adapter configured settings.

Access Point (AP)

Wireless Network Components - Basics of Any Wireless Network

As the name suggests an AP (access point) allows connectivity between the wireless client or wireless device and the wired network. The AP takes wireless data packets from a client and translates them to standard Ethernet data frames before transmitting across the wired network. Standard category 5 twisted pair cabling will connect the AP point Ethernet port with a catalyst switch Ethernet port. The maximum distance between access point and network switch is 100 meters standard with Ethernet design.

WLAN Controllers

Wireless designs with hundreds of root APs on an enterprise network will sometimes deploy wireless LAN controllers. The design specifies lightweight APs connecting to a network switch. The 4404 WLAN controller device acts as a hub connecting 4 network switches supporting 100 access points. Cisco wireless control system (WCS) wireless network management software is sometimes deployed with WLAN controller design for planning, configuring and optimizing the network.

Power Injector

Cisco access points have a variety of power options such as AC adapters, power over Ethernet and power injectors. The placement of APs is such that in some situations an AC power outlet isn't available. Should your Ethernet switch not support power over Ethernet, an option such as power injectors extends the distance from an AC outlet. Distances of 1.24 miles are available with a fiber optic media converter.

Power over Ethernet

Cisco access points can be deployed with power over Ethernet (PoE) should the network switch modules support that feature. The distance of 300 feet is the same with Cisco prestandard and 802.3af. The Cisco prestandard use Cat 5 cabling pins 1, 2, 3, 6 for powering devices while 802.3af uses 1, 2, 3, 6 with 10/100/1000BaseT signaling and 4, 5, 7, 8 with 10/100BaseT. Select a network switch module with the power over Ethernet standard your AP has implemented and has a power wattage rating per port for your specific devices. The network switch power supply should be upgraded to support additional power draw from multiple devices. Deploying power over Ethernet will decrease implementation costs with deployment of IPT, wireless and Gigabit. See network switch documents at Cisco web site for information on what network switching modules support PoE and wattage ratings. 802.3af defines powered device class 2 at 3.84W - 6.49W and class 3 at 6.49W - 12.95W.

Power Patch Panel

Cisco inline power patch panels can be deployed where Ethernet switches don't support power over Ethernet and power injectors aren't an option. The patch panel does no switching. It powers the devices through a Cat 5 cable that is a maximum 300 feet at a specific rated wattage per port. The patch panel connects the access point to the wired switch with a patch cable.
